Personally, I think this could be construed positively, because over the last year, despite:
- Brexit implementation
- The global pandemic
- The private sector IR35 implementation
Interim Managers were still in demand, with an average of 143 billable days in 2020.
This demonstrates that the knowledge, experience and leadership Interim talent can impart is a critical facet of the global economy.
Furthermore, there has been a slight rise in average day rates this year.
- Private sector average day rate: £862 (up from £819 last year)
- Public sector average day rate: £668 (like £662 last year)
- Overall average day rate: £794 (up from £769 last year)
One thing that does need addressing is the gender pay gap, with an 8% difference between male and female Interim Managers, which according to the survey:
- Male Interim average day rate £796
- Female Interim average day rate: £704
At Procurement Heads, we are currently seeing a huge increase in demand for Interims who have procurement and supply chain experience.
The demand has been consistent for about 2-3 months now but there has been a very distinct change from:
- Project focused
- Outside IR35
- Mid-senior level (£500pd – £900pd) opportunities
- Inside IR35
- Mid-level (£400pd – £600pd) opportunities
The shift appears to be driven by the tightening permanent market where permanent roles are taking longer to appoint – creating the need for a contingency plan to manage workload.
In addition, there are project and transformation programmes underway where the client is looking to upskill its current employees by offering them project-based role and covering their existing duties.
