Will Cooke

Will joined Procurement Heads in 2021 and is a Senior Recruitment Consultant within the Financial & Professional Services practice.

Why did you choose procurement recruitment as a career?

I studied Sport & Exercise Psychology up to master’s level, with the intention of pursuing a career in that field.

However, after graduating in 2020 amid the pandemic, that idea was put on hold.

I spent a year in retail before looking for graduate roles.

It was then I was drawn to recruitment, I had always taken an interest in people and ‘why we do what we do’ and recruitment was an opportunity to speak with and interact with people from all walks of life.

In all honesty, I didn’t know what procurement was before joining Heads, but I feel lucky to have been introduced to it!

What sort of procurement roles do you recruit and where?

I recruit procurement roles in Financial & Professional Services organisations in the UK and primarily focus on roles paying up to £60,000 salary.

What qualities do you believe are integral to being a successful procurement recruiter?

I think like any job, working hard is key.

That combined with a growth mindset, and the belief you can continually learn and get better, I think is a winning combination.

What do Procurement Heads’ values mean to you?

They are at the core of everything we do, both internally: how we work with one another and externally: how we work with our candidates and clients.

Exceeding Expectations for me, is going above and beyond to make the difference.

Rewarding Relationships is at the core of what we do, the business is built on long-standing partnerships which have been nurtured over years and years.

And finally, ‘Doing the Right Thing’ is considered in every decision, large or small, I make in my days. Making the ‘right’ choice is always key.

And our purpose is to deliver recruitment as a professional service, what does that mean to you?

I think holding our work in a higher regard than some stereotypes of what recruiters do.

Our purpose tells both clients and candidates the way in which we want to approach the service we’re giving.

How has procurement changed during your time recruiting into the sector?

I’m starting to hear and see more about ESG and sustainability in procurement.

Being responsible for billions of pounds of spend each year, it’s a key area for businesses to get right.

What inspires you?

I read that if you get 1% better each day, in a year’s time you’ll be 37 times better than when you started.

So, for me, learning new things is massive. I understand that there is still so much for me to learn that will enable me to be a better recruiter.

What 3 words would you use to describe your professional self?

Relaxed, enthusiastic, patient

What do you enjoy most about procurement recruitment?

I enjoy building new relationships with candidates and clients which often involves travelling to their offices and meeting face-to-face which makes a nice change of pace from video and phone calls.

I also enjoy being around the team at Procurement Heads, we’ve got a great bunch of personalities and characters on the team.

What are some of the biggest highlights since you joined Procurement Heads?

I think a highlight for me was getting promoted.

After joining as a Recruitment Associate I was given some great management which helped me to progress and gain a promotion after seven months.

Those seven months came with some tough times but thankfully these were outweighed by the positives!

Another highlight for me was our team trip to London.

After some very competitive mini-golf, we had some gorgeous food and a top evening celebrating a successful year.
