We have been retained by Purity Soft Drinks to appoint their first Procurement Manager. This is a Greenfield site reporting to the CFO.
Purity Soft Drinks is a UK Based Manufacturer of Soft Drinks, home to Juice Burst & Firefly, based in Wednesbury in the West Midlands.
Established in 1892, it has remained in Wednesbury since that date, manufacturing Juices for UK Customers.
The site is AA BRC Accredited – which it has achieved for three years in a row. They currently employ 52 colleagues, who are either based in Wednesbury or from home.
In 2012, it was purchased by Private Equity (Langholm Capital) from the original Family, and then most recently in 2021, sold to Verdane (a Northern European based Private Equity house) who are now looking to increase the size and scale of the business through driving the brands.
The business was struck significantly by the Pandemic in 2020 and its turnover declined from £18M down to £10M. The reason for this is the majority of revenue is derived from ‘On the Go’, Schools, and Workplaces, all of which were closed due to CV19.
However, during the last 12 months, it has recovered very strongly and in the most recent 12 months (ending April 2022), is on track to achieve a turnover of £23M – with a very strong double-digit EBITDA.
The Procurement Manager is a greenfield appointment for Purity Soft Drinks and is an extremely important appointment to the business that reports directly to the CFO with significant access to a multitude of stakeholders across the whole business, including the Senior Leadership team, CEO, and Verdane Investment Directors.
You will be delivering on the Sourcing Strategy for both brands and will work closely with the Operations function, ensuring a strong link between both departments.
With a cost base of c£12m, you will lead the creation of a Procurement Department spanning:
- Sourcing/Category Management
- Contract Management
Initially a standalone role, you will embed a fit for purpose procurement process and strategy that the business can adapt and you will drive centrally.
Over time, you will have the autonomy to build a team around you as the headline growth meets its trajectory.
Regarding contract templates, these are created by the PE Lawyers. What is therefore needed from a contract management perspective is an understanding of the various commercial elements and levers used within a procurement contract.
From a data perspective, three main systems are used in conjunction with Excel to interrogate data and manage the transactional process: Sage, Proteus Warehouse System and Qlik Analytics.
There is a recognition from the business that there will need to be an upgrade or ERP implementation project over time although this is not an immediate project.
All products are manufactured on-site including the bottles using a 24/5 shift pattern with the capacity to increase this to 24/7 over time or expand into new premises on the current site.
You will be responsible for the sourcing of all materials and commodities, along with packaging, sundry and certain indirect items.
The Operations Director will be a peer and a key stakeholder for you, and an understanding of the manufacturing process would therefore be advantageous.
This role is both strategic and hands-on in the absence of a team and the successful individual will need to be comfortable owning the entire procurement process end-to-end.
They operate a hybrid working model and you would be required on-site two days per week and the rest remote.
Currently, the CEO & CFO are in on Tues/Wed but it’s up to you if you wish to match this.
The role would suit an aspiring Head of Procurement who is currently wanting a new challenge. You may be a Category Manager currently and want to broaden your scope or you could be a Procurement Manager reporting to a Head of Procurement that has hit a ceiling where you are.
