Head of Procurement | Financial Services | Hampshire

A leading multinational Insurance organisation with UK Headquarters in Hampshire and 5 Business Units nationwide, is seeking its first Head of Procurement.

Previously, Procurement was managed by the various departmental heads and there is now a need to have a fully centralised Procurement function. 

Reporting to the Finance Director with a dotted line into the CFO, the Head of Procurement will be responsible for a spend of £100m across Indirects categories as well as working heavily with the claims (directs) Senior Supplier Relationship Manager, supporting on a variety of Procurement projects and programmes. 

Currently there is a small team in place and the Head of Procurement will be required to grow out their own capability as they see fit. An interim has been in place for over a year and is due to leave at the end of March. This role will therefore need to continue the momentum and as the Procurement function continues to mature, embed its processes into the business and drive tangible value 

Key projects include: 

  • Upholding the Procurement framework and driving implementation of technology platforms (notably Jira) 
  • Own, refine and embed a Vendor Management programme across the business 
  • Work to targeted savings programme for 2020 
  • Build a team/capability as necessary 

As Head of Procurement your key responsibilities will be: 

  • Continue the ongoing development of Central Procurement, ensuring that Procurement is positioned and perceived as a value-adding strategic function
  • Senior Stakeholder Management: Maintain useful relationships with business leaders, adding value to their thoughts, explaining the Procurement Strategy and ensuring that Procurement is represented as a value adding and useful function
  • Lead by example to negotiate well-structured supplier Agreements, that add value to the business
  • Drive ongoing development of the Procurement & VM Frameworks, and Contract Administration services including Master Contract Register ongoing integrity
  • Ensuring that the Procurement process is efficient and operates at pace to provide timely and value adding support to the business, while upholding good procurement practice including ensuring Agreements or POs are raised for each requisition
  • Minimising uncontrolled maverick buying within the business, guiding and influencing colleagues to stop this practice where it occurs
  • Accountable for ensuring the technology strategy is implemented, including the full implementation of OneTrust, Jira, ServiceNow and upgrading JDE for POs
  • Contribute actively and regularly (monthly) as UK representative for the Group Procurement Task Force, be a part of the CPO community
  • Liaise regularly with Finance Business Partners to share key information, for example to identify savings opportunities and to independently validate savings delivered by Procurement
  • Accountable for delivering £400k banked MYB savings in 2020 
  • Leading and managing the team. Develop training and development plans
  • Recruit 1 x VM Co-ordinator and 2 x Buyers to ensure the function is scalable and is able to support all in scope directorates, in a timely manner
  • Project Manager: Oversee Procure to Pay PO projects: PO implementation and Accelerated Supplier Payment Methods projects 
  • Effectively and with credibility represent Procurement for cross functional projects led by other teams

Skills and experience: 

  • At least 5 years relevant Procurement experience at a Management level, and 10 years business experience, with good practical knowledge of Procurement and VM
  • Able to balance good procurement practice and strengthened governance with quick time to value. A pragmatic approach is key
  • Knowledge and gravitas of Procurement and Supplier Management topics, in the context of dealing with senior stakeholders from Compliance, Risk, Legal and Infosec
  • Good communication skills, able to clearly articulate the value of Procurement
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills, with the ability to generate rapport with stakeholders from around the business and to be approached and relied upon as a trusted advisor
  • Commercial acumen and negotiation prowess. Understanding how to strengthen a supplier proposal to add greater value. 
  • Professionalism, robustness and gravitas dealing with suppliers
