Category Lead – Energy

Procurement Heads' Pharmaceutical & Healthcare practice has been retained by Alliance Healthcare to appoint the role of Category Lead - Energy.

Alliance Healthcare was acquired by AmerisourceBergen in June 2021, America’s largest pharmaceutical wholesaler ranked number 10 on the Fortune 500.

Following the acquisition, the Group Procurement Director joined the organisation with the mandate to transform the procurement function.

To date, he has successfully secured C-suite support to facilitate this transformation.
Currently, the procurement team consists of 20 generalists operating in a flat structure across the UK and Europe sourcing everything from transportation, IT, facilities, energy, business services, and capital equipment.
You will spearhead the transformation of the energy category across Alliance Healthcare by utilising data to understand energy market trends and working closely with internal stakeholders to develop and implement a pan-European solution for the organisation.
The Category Lead – Energy role is not only about achieving cost savings but offers the fantastic opportunity to have a lasting impact by driving the use of renewable energy, phasing out the use of gas from energy spend, and centralising the sourcing and strategy for procuring energy across the organisation.
Given the federated structure of Alliance Healthcare across the UK and Europe, it allows you to adapt to the unique challenges of different markets while still maintaining a centralised and strategic approach to effectively meet the needs of the various regions.
The role necessitates a candidate with the gravitas and credibility to effectively influence international stakeholders while fostering a collaborative approach to change management.
Critical areas of focus:

  • Conducting an energy data mapping analysis to understand current coverage positions and the types of energy being procured across Alliance Healthcare.
  • Implementing and managing Power Purchase Agreements to ensure they meet the organisation’s needs.
  • Centralising the sourcing and strategy for procuring energy across the UK and Europe.
  • Increasing the use of renewable electricity.
  • Eliminating the use of gas from energy spend.
  • Reducing consumption and dependency on the external grid by implementing on-site solar, heat-source pumps, efficient building design, and wind sources.

About you:
The role requires a hybrid working approach; 50% remote with the remaining 50% on-site in Weybridge or travelling to other locations.
The role will be UK-based (relocation is supported) and entails regular travel to various locations including France, Spain, Netherlands, Norway, Turkey, and Romania to align category strategy with in-country stakeholders.
You will be responsible for leading the energy category strategy across Europe, with the aim of maximising the total cost of ownership savings and procurement value contribution.
You should possess the ability to formulate and implement a clear strategic vision and plan and communicate it effectively to stakeholders, while also demonstrating a hands-on approach and an understanding of the cultural subtleties of different teams and individuals across the organisation.
You will need to evidence how you have navigated and influenced challenging stakeholders to achieve overall business objectives through a collaborative and consensus-building approach.
A CIPS qualification and experience with Power Purchase Agreements will be required.

MCIPS Level 6 and 10+ years in a procurement role is desirable.
In addition to the technical qualifications, you should be comfortable in a flat structured organisation, as a cultural fit is an important consideration for the role.
Benefits of the Category Lead – Energy role to be discussed on an individual basis.
